You will need to unpair a controller in the following circumstances:

When you replace the physical controller hardware.

After defaulting the controller.

Before you delete a controller record.
No records are removed or altered when the controller is unpaired, but the controller's serial number is removed from the programming. The serial number will need to be re-entered before the controller can be paired again.
If you need to replace the physical hardware, you can simply enter the new serial number into the existing controller record and pair the new controller. This will associate all existing controller-specific records and devices with the new controller.
To unpair a controller:

Navigate to Controller Records | Controllers and select the controller to be unpaired.
If the controller is currently paired and the operator has the necessary update permissions the Unpair button will be enabled.
- Click Unpair.
- Click Proceed to confirm unpairing.
- To pair the same controller or a new one, enter the Serial Number and click Pair & Sync.
